Dead miles The distance from your starting point to the courier package collection address for a courier consignment is known as dead miles. Also called stem miles.
Dedicated A dedicated courier load is one where the customer has paid for a courier consignment to be taken straight from the courier collection address to the courier delivery address, without stopping to collect or deliver other loads or courier package along the way.
Delivery confirmation A special service that provides the date of delivery or attempted delivery for priority or standard mail or courier parcels.
Delivery note A courier delivery note is a courier document that goes with the goods or courier package. It is provided by the consignor and is given to the consignee. It shows the courier delivery address and describes the goods or courier parcel. It can also be used as a POD for courier service.
Direct mail A form of advertising often used by businesses to reach targeted groups of potential customers by mail.
Drivers' hours rules There are rules which apply to the hours that can be worked by drivers of goods / courier vehicles. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes driving hours are monitored by a tachograph. For smaller vehicles in the UK the rules are simpler and there is no legal requirement to keep a record of driving hours.
